March 26th 2019

Dear Parents,

We’re getting close to the Easter holidays and it’s going to be a busy couple of weeks:

Green-Schools

Many thanks to the children for making our Day of Action such as success. We raised €100 which will be used to buy a Trócaire Gift of Water.

The deadline for applying for renewal of our Green-Schools Flag is this Friday, March 29th and we are expecting a visit from Cliona Connolly, Environmental Officer with Wexford County Council, this week. When the visit has been completed, I will send in the completed application form and hopefully we will be successful. It was great to see such a great write-up about our Day of Action in the “New Ross Standard” last week.

Credit Union Quiz

Our Senior quiz team also featured in last week’s paper. Well done to Marie, Katie, Seán and Fionn for representing the school in Gorey.

5-a-side soccer

The pupils from 4th to 6th class will represent the school at the FAI 5-a-side soccer tournament, tomorrow, Wednesday in New Ross Celtic’s pitch. We will have three teams taking part on the day – one girl’s team and two mixed teams. Normal school rules will apply and the children may wear the school tracksuit. The children will need runners, football boots, shin-guards, a packed lunch and possibly a rain jacket.

The bus will leave school at 9:15 am and we should be back by 3:00 pm. Many thanks to the parents who will accompany us to New Ross.

Music Generation

Our singing teacher, Aideen Ní Riada, has completed her time with Music Generation. A new teacher, Elizabeth Drwal, will begin to teach the children singing next week.

Swimming

Our ten weeks’ swimming lessons have been completed. I would like to say well done to the children for their exemplary behaviour during the term. Thanks also to Swim Ireland / Sports Active Wexford for the €400 contribution to the lessons.

Scríobh Leabhar Awards

As you already know, the children from 2nd to 6th class took part in the Scríobh Leabhar project earlier this term. Each child wrote a book as Gaeilge for the project. We were one of only six schools in the county to participate in the project and we have been invited to an awards day on April 11th in the Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy, from 12:30 pm to 2:15 pm. We have decided to bring the whole school to the awards to give us all a chance to celebrate the achievements of our writers together. I will send home a permission slip for this trip next week.

Easter closing

The school will close at 12:30 pm on Friday, April 12th for the Easter break.

Hurling 365

I would like to complement the children who take part in Hurling 365 every Friday from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm and a massive thank you to Brendan and Denise for the time they have put into the hurling. I would like to encourage as many children as possible to take part for the final two Fridays of this term – March 29th and April 5th (there will be no Hurling 365 on April 12th). The hurling will go ahead, regardless of the weather – we will leave it to you, the parents to decide if you want to collect your children if it rains.

Football Féile

Congratulations to St James’ GAA Club on winning the Division 2 Football Féile last week. A special well done to the Shielbaggan representatives on the team – Danny McPhillips, Danny Costello, Liam Walsh and Finn O’Connor and the best of luck to the team as they represent Wexford at the finals later in the year.

That’s all for now. I will be in touch again before the holidays.

Kind regards,

Patricia Foran
