Thursday October 15th  was a special day in Shielbaggan NS. At 9.30am we welcomed Sgt Kieran Kennedy and Lt Shane Flood to our school  They came to present us with the National Flag and a copy of the 1916 Proclamation. This is all part of the government’s celebrations of the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

The children welcomed the soldiers with a rendition of Dawning of the Day on the tin whistles. Lt Shane spoke to us about the significance of the National Flag and told us how to care for it.

Kyran and Cara accepted the Flag and the Proclamation on behalf of the school while the seniors played The Foggy Dew.

To finish the ceremony, Kyran played Amhran na bhFiann on the concertina.

It was a really enjoyable occasion and  many thanks to so many parents for attending. The Flag will be raised on March 15th at the same time as every other school in the country!
